Understanding Mood Disorders

Definition

Mood disorders are conditions where mood swings affect a person’s ability to function. The most common mood disorders we treat are bipolar I, bipolar II, and cyclothymia. Some patients also present with mood instability that does not fit a single category.
Accurate diagnosis is critical for mood disorders. The right medication for bipolar disorder is different from the right medication for depression, and getting the diagnosis right protects you from treatments that may not help, or could make symptoms worse.

Common signs and symptoms

  • Periods of unusually high energy, less need for sleep, or rapid speech
  • Periods of depression alternating with periods of higher mood or energy
  • Impulsive decisions during high-energy periods
  • Racing thoughts
  • Irritability that comes in waves
  • Difficulty maintaining relationships or work due to mood swings
  • Family history of bipolar disorder
  • Prior depression that did not respond to typical antidepressants
