Understanding Depression

Definition

Depression is more than feeling sad. It is a medical condition that affects energy, motivation, sleep, appetite, focus, and the ability to enjoy life. Depression can come on suddenly, develop slowly, or come and go in cycles.

The good news is that depression is highly treatable. With the right plan, most patients see meaningful improvement within weeks to months.

Common signs and symptoms

  • Persistent low mood or sadness
  • Loss of interest in things you used to enjoy
  • Changes in sleep (too much or too little)
  • Changes in appetite or weight
  • Fatigue or low energy
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Feeling worthless or guilty
  • Thoughts of death or self-harm

Our Approach & Treatment Options

Our approach

We begin with a thorough psychiatric evaluation, including medical history, current symptoms, prior treatments, and any contributing factors.

Treatment is personalized. Plans may include medication management, brief psychotherapy, lifestyle changes, lab work to rule out medical contributors, and referrals when ongoing therapy is the right fit.

We monitor closely and adjust the plan if response is slow or partial. We never let a patient feel stuck on a medication that is not working.

Treatment options for this condition

  • Medication management (SSRIs, SNRIs, atypicals, and others)
  • Brief psychotherapy and supportive counseling
  • Lab coordination to rule out medical contributors
  • Referrals for ongoing therapy
  • Treatment-resistant depression management with specialist coordination
