Understanding Anxiety

Definition

Anxiety is a natural response to stress, uncertainty, or perceived danger. When worry or fear becomes persistent, difficult to control, or begins interfering with school, work, relationships, sleep, or daily activities, additional support may be helpful.

Anxiety can affect both the mind and body. Symptoms vary by person and may occur with generalized anxiety, panic disorder, social anxiety, phobias, or other mental health concerns. A comprehensive evaluation can help clarify what you are experiencing and identify appropriate treatment options. National Institute of Mental Health

Our Approach to Anxiety Care

Our approach

Care begins with understanding your symptoms, health history, daily stressors, sleep, functioning, and previous treatment. We also consider whether medical conditions, medications, or other mental health concerns may be contributing to the symptoms.

Treatment is individualized and may include education about anxiety, practical coping strategies, supportive psychotherapy, medication management, or referral for ongoing therapy. When authorized by the patient or family, we may coordinate with therapists, primary care providers, pediatricians, and other members of the care team.

Psychotherapy, medication, or a combination of both may be used to treat anxiety disorders, depending on the individual’s needs and clinical circumstances.
