Understanding Behavioral Concerns

Definition

Behavioral concerns cover a wide range of changes that show up in how a child or teen acts at
home, at school, or with peers. These changes can include defiance, aggression, withdrawal,
tantrums past the typical age, sudden mood shifts, or difficulty following rules and routines.
Behavioral concerns are rarely just behavior. They often signal something happening
underneath, whether that is ADHD, anxiety, mood changes, a learning challenge, sensory
sensitivity, or a response to a stressful life event. Our job is to look at the full picture, not just the
surface.

Common signs and symptoms

  • Frequent defiance or refusal of routine expectations
  • Aggression, hitting, throwing, or destroying property
  • Withdrawal from friends, family, or previously enjoyed activities
  • Tantrums or emotional outbursts past the typical developmental age
  • Difficulty transitioning between activities or settings
  • Sudden changes in mood, sleep, or appetite
  • School reports of concerning behavior
  • Behavior that feels 'off' or out of character

Care Across Georgia
Same-week appointments often available for new patients.

Our Approach & Treatment Options

Our approach

Our evaluation looks at the whole child, medical history, current environment, sleep, school, family dynamics, and any prior treatment. We use validated screening tools alongside careful listening to what parents are observing at home. Treatment is family-centered. Many behavioral concerns respond to parent coaching, behavioral therapy referrals, school accommodations, and reatment of underlying conditions like ADHD or anxiety. Medication is one tool we consider carefully when clinically indicated, never as the first or only answer. We provide written communication to schools and pediatricians when helpful, and we work with
your existing therapist if you have one.

Treatment options for this condition

  • Evaluation and treatment of underlying conditions (ADHD, anxiety, mood)
  • Parent coaching and behavioral strategy planning
  • Behavioral therapy and family therapy referrals
  • School accommodation documentation (IEP, 504) when appropriate
  • Medication management when clinically indicated
  • Coordination with pediatrician, therapist, and school team
