Understanding Mood Disorders
Definition
Mood disorders are conditions where mood swings affect a person’s ability to function. The most common mood disorders we treat are bipolar I, bipolar II, and cyclothymia. Some patients also present with mood instability that does not fit a single category.
Accurate diagnosis is critical for mood disorders. The right medication for bipolar disorder is different from the right medication for depression, and getting the diagnosis right protects you from treatments that may not help, or could make symptoms worse.
